Foundations in Accountancy (FiA) Suite
Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) consist of a suite of awards, including certificates, diplomas and a revised Certificate in Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification. It provides students with flexible entry points with certification awarded at each level, allowing students to tailor the awards, making them an attractive and relevant choice for employers. Diploma and Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) holders have direct entry to Skills level of the ACCA Professional Scheme.
Learning Outcome
With Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification, students will be able to support financial managers in any type of business all over the world. Upon completion of the examinations you will be able to call yourself a Certified Accounting Technician and use the designation CAT after your name.

Please note – to receive the recognition of completing each award, students must complete Foundations in Professionalism, but it only needs to be completed once.
Important notes on Entry Requirements
Foundations in Accountancy (FiA) provides various entry points for students:
It is critical to note that, exams FAB, FMA & FFA in FIA are the same as exams F1, F2 & F3 of the ACCA qualification with identical syllabus, study guides and assessment methods.
Diploma in Accounting and Business, with open access through FIA will replace the current Mature Student Entry Route (MSER) of the ACCA qualification for students who do not meet the ACCA qualification minimum entry requirements. Student intending to register under MSER may now opt for FAB, FMA & FFA Paper under FIA. Once completed students gain exemption from F1, F2 & F3 of the ACCA qualification.

Self-Check Modules
ACCA has developed self-check modules in Maths and English to help students decide if they are ready to start their ACCA or CAT/FIA studies. The self-check modules are optional to complete, free of charge and provide students with feedback on their levels of ability in English and Maths. The Self Check Modules are available in ACCA website - http://www.accaglobal.com
Foundations in Professionalism
Students registered for entry-level qualifications in Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) are required to complete “Foundations in Professionalism” online, interactive module. You can complete Foundations in Professionalism before or after completing the exam component of the qualification. There is no set time allocated to completing Foundations in Professionalism.
Conversion arrangements for existing students
Conversions of students from the existing CAT Qualification to Foundations in Accountancy will be awarded on a paper-for-paper basis. The conversion arrangement will ensure no student is disadvantaged in transition from the current to the revised syllabus. Students who have completed the current CAT exams by June 2011 will be automatically transferred to Foundations in Accountancy and awarded converted exemptions or passes for all papers they have previously been given exemptions from or passed.

Graduation Requirements
There are four qualifications in total:
- Introductory and Intermediate Certificates in Financial and Management Accounting
- Diploma in Accounting and Business
- Certified Accounting Technician (including two specialist options)
- Foundations in Professionalism must be completed once for any of the above four qualifications
Progression onto ACCA Qualification
Students who successfully complete the Diploma in Accounting and Business via Foundations in Accountancy can either
- Transfer to the ACCA qualification and commence the studies from F4 onwards of the ACCA qualification or,
- Continue to study for the CAT qualification. However, please note students who continue with CAT qualification either need to go back and complete FA1, MA1, FA2 & MA2 or Claim exemption from this exam on the basis of practical experience

Modules Synopses
FA1 Recording Financial Transactions
To analyse, evaluate and conclude on the assurance engagement and other audit and assurance issues in the context of best practice and current developments.
MA1 Management Information
To develop the ability to use a computer system safely and effectively and to understand the need for data and information to be kept confidential and secure. To develop knowledge and an understanding of how organisations provide basic management information for decision-making, planning and control.
FA2 Maintaining Financial Records
To develop knowledge and understanding of the techniques used to maintain accounting records and prepare final accounts of unincorporated entities.
MA2 Maintaining Costs and Finance
To develop knowledge and understanding of how organisations record, analyse and report current and future costs and revenue data for use within the organisation.
FAB Accountant in Business
To develop knowledge and understanding of the role of a manager in an effective, efficient, safe and secure accounting environment. This includes the coordination of work activities, the maintenance of an effective accounting system, people management, personal effectiveness, health and safety and security issues within the workplace.
FFA Financial Accounting
To understand and apply the techniques used to prepare year-end financial statements of partnerships and limited companies which comply with legislation and accounting standards, and to interpret financial statements and the relationships between their elements using ratio analysis.
FMA Management Accounting
To develop knowledge and understanding of the application of management accounting techniques to support the management processes of planning, decision-making, control and performance measurement.
FAU Foundations in Audit
To develop knowledge and understanding of the audit process from the planning stage through to the reporting stage and the techniques used in the conduct of internal and external audits.
FFM Foundations in Financial Management
To develop knowledge and understanding of the way organisations finance their operations, plan and control cash flows, optimise their use of working capital and allocate resources to capital expenditure projects.
